Sleep Paralysis and Hypnagogic Hallucinations on Ghostly TV Show
Sleep Paralysis and Hypnagogic Hallucinations have for generations been explained as a supernatural type encounter – from the “Old Hag” we so commonly hear associated with this experience (also know as the night witch or incubus), to the names other cultures use, such as Kijimunaa in Japan, Night Marchers, or Huaka’i Po in Hawaii, The Dark Presser/Assailer or Karabasan in Turkey, Amuku Be or Amuku Pei, ghost that forces one down in Tamil Sri Lank, and Dukak, evil demon during sleep in Ethiopia – to name but a few!
Now a new television show is exploring SP with HH in a “ghostly” themed new series. Anyone who has experienced SP with HH will attest to its frightening nature, and while the TV show does deal with the interviewees sympathetically, it also seems to add to the aura of “weirdness” surrounding this phenomenon.
I feel it always useful to discuss previously taboo or off-limits experiences like this so firstly, those who experience them know they are not alone, and secondly, to help educate those who may not be aware of these things. But does this show help the cause, or serve to alienate those who have experienced SP with HH by making them out as freakish and unlike the rest of society?
What do you think?
